Choosing the Right Drawer Slide

Choosing the Right Drawer Slide

Mount

Decide whether you want side-mount, center-mount or undermount slides. The amount of space between your drawer box and the cabinet opening will affect your decision.

drawer slide

Side-mount slides are sold in pairs or sets, with a slide attaching to each side of the drawer.

- Available with either a ball-bearing or roller mechanism.

- Require clearance – usually 1/2" – between the drawer slides and the sides of the cabinet opening.

center mounted drawer slides

Center-mount slides are sold as single slides that, as the name suggests, mount under the center of the drawer.

- Available in classic wood version or with ball-bearing mechanism.

- Required clearance depends on thickness of slide.

undermount drawer slides

Under-mount slides are ball-bearing slides that are sold in pairs. They mount to the sides of the cabinet and connect to locking devices attached to the underside of the drawer.

- Not visible when the drawer is open, making them a good choice if you want to highlight your cabinetry.

- Require less clearance between the drawer sides and the cabinet opening (usually 3/16" to 1/4" per side).

- Require specific clearance at top and bottom of cabinet opening; drawer sides typically can be no more than 5/8" thick.

- Space from underside of drawer bottom to bottom of drawer sides must be 1/2".

Slide length

Determine what length of slide you need.

tape measure measuring a drawer space for drawer slides

• Slides most commonly come in sizes ranging from 10" to 28", though some shorter and longer slides are available for special applications.

• For side-mount and center-mount slides, typically measure the distance from the front edge of the cabinet to the inside face of the cabinet back and then subtract 1".

• For under-mount slides, measure the drawer length. Slides must be the same length as drawer to work properly.

Extension

Decide how far out you want the drawer to come when open.

3/4 extension: Part of the drawer remains in the cabinet. An economical option when full access isn’t an issue.

Full extension: Allows drawer to open the full length of the slide, providing greater access.

Over travel: Allows drawer to open beyond full extension, providing complete access – even underneath countertops.

Weight Rating

Think about how much weight the drawer will need to hold.

several drawers open to show the different weigt ratings of drawer slides

• Slides typically are rated for 75, 100 or 150 pounds, though some are rated for less and some specialty slides can handle as much as 220 pounds.

• Weight rating is especially important when choosing slides for heavy-duty applications such as file drawers or pantry pull-outs.

Color

Are you looking for a specific color?

black, white, and brown drawer slides
• Most slides have a zinc finish.

• Centerline Lifetime Series 757 also are available in black (great for entertainment centers).

• Blum Self Closing Epoxy Roller slides are available in white or brown (only at Rockler).

Motion

Decide whether you want special motion features.

a drawer slide in motion

Push to open: Slides open with a nudge to the drawer front, eliminating the need for handles or pulls. An especially good option for modern kitchens, where hardware might not be desired.

Self close: Slides return the drawer all the way into the cabinet when drawer is pushed in that direction.

Soft close: Slides add a dampening effect to self-close feature, returning

the drawer into the cabinet softly, without slamming.

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Pancakes Gluten Free

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Pancakes - Gluten Free

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Pancakes – Gluten Free / seeandsavour.com

September 23 marks the first official day of Fall. It’s hard to believe since last week we were facing temperatures in the 100º in Los Angeles, thankfully it has cooled down a good 15º-20º but still not quite fall weather here. Though I’m heading off to Chicago this weekend to see my dear friend Sarah where I expect temperatures to be more fall like. Since it’s not quite fall like here I made some pumpkin pancakes to get myself in the

fall mood – perfect for the cool brisk mornings I am so looking forward to.

Chicken Shawarma Naan Salad

Chicken Shawarma Naan Salad

Chicken Shawarma Naan Salad with Sweet Potato Fries | halfbakedharvest.com @hbharvest
This is more of a salad/flatbread/naan situation topped with EPIC ingredients.

It’s really not even a salad, and I deliberated and deliberated for probably close to an hour on just what to call this. In the end, salad seemed most fitting, but promise it’s probably one of the best “salads” you’ll eat. I mean, it’s Monday, I would not give anything short of a KILLER recipe to you on a Monday…cause lets be honest, Monday NEEDS something delicious to help us get through to Tuesday. <–truth.

So as of late, I have become mildly obsessed with hummus, middle eastern food and basically anything I can eat with naan. Naan is my kind of bread, and anything I can eat along side it is going to be my kind of food. Middle eastern food and I are having a moment, and I am just full on embracing it.

If you follow me on snapchat and or Instagram than you got a glimpse of that this weekend. Hello mass amounts of beet hummus… and well – plenty of cookies too.

Speaking of this weekend, I have to tell you guys that while the weather was totally and completely crummy…UGH the snow. It was also very productive and um filled with delicious things. I spent some serious one on one time with my younger brother Kai (videos coming soon!), was told I was a good-looking girl…by a fifty year old man…not sure what to think about that one. I mean, I guess it’s nice, but where are my twenty-two year old guys at?? Come on brothers? You gotta get some better friends, or maybe I gotta get out… maybe both?

Both for sure.

I also learned that people who look at me every single day really notice when I actually try a little and like brush my hair, brush on a little make-up and wear clothes that are NOT covered in raw egg, flour and beet juice. I got a lot of “wow, you look pretty” this weekend. Not complaining.

Kai is headed back to LA today, back to school, so a little sad about that, BUT the good news is that he’s coming back for his spring break in a couple of weeks. I kind of wish I was headed to LA though. Is anyone else completely over the cold and ready for spring??

Clearly I am.

Evidence of my serious spring fever will be shinning through in a major way this week, and it all starts with this salad.

I am crazy about this salad. It’s basically like a Chicken Shawarma wrap, just not wrapped up. You can totally wrap this up to-go, but photographing wraps is my worst nightmare, so I went for leaving them flat…hence the whole salad thing.

If you are unfamiliar with Chicken Shawarma, it’s a simple middle eastern dish that can be made using either poultry, beef or lamb and is served in or on a pita with a savory yogurt sauce.Chicken Shawarma is a middle eastern street food and guys, it’s completely delish. The chicken gets marinated in a mix of middle eastern spices, garlic, olive oil and tons of lemon. It is tradition to roast the chicken, but I went for skewering it and grilling it. You can certainly roast it, but I personally love this on skewers. The chicken gets a nice char on the outside while staying juicy on the inside. It also cooks up a lot faster than if roasting. However, if roasting sounds more appealing to you, I would use chicken thighs and roast them whole so they don’t dry out.

Chicken Shawarma Naan Salad with Sweet Potato Fries | halfbakedharvest.com @hbharvest

Chicken Shawarma Naan Salad with Sweet Potato Fries | halfbakedharvest.com @hbharvest
Once you have your chicken marinating, the rest
is pretty simple.

Here’s how it goes…

….start with fresh naan

….slather on generous amounts of hummus

….drizzle with some greek yogurt

….add toppings like: heirloom cherry tomatoes + romaine lettuce + cucumbers + fresh mint + fresh parsley

….top with sweet potato fries

….then the Chicken Shawarma skewers

….generously drizzle everything with some chipotle tahini sauce

….and finally, finish with crumbled feta…lots and lots of feta

DONE. EAT. BE HAPPY.

The sweet potato fries are an obvious MUST here. Again it’s not traditional, but let’s be real, can sweet potato fries ever not be a must? Also, never skimp on the feta, just saying.

And then yeah, that’s kind of it. Sounds pretty KILLER right?!? I mean, hey, Monday isn’t looking so rough anymore. Nope, not when this salad is involved…

OK, ok, maybe adding in a nap + cookie would really, really help to make the day go smooth. Yup, I sure do know how to do a Monday right…that’s for dang sure.

ChemicalFree Paint Removal in a Slow Cooker — The Family Handyman

Chemical-Free Paint Removal in a Slow Cooker — The Family Handyman

Paint might be the easiest way to make over a room, but many tenants or past residents don"t take the time to remove the hardware from their doors and windows before doing so. If you"re looking to strip all those years of color choices, here"s a way to do it without chemicals and without lifting a finger.

Over at The Family Handyman, they suggest putting your slow cooker to use. You"ll want to pick up a second one from a thrift store, or at least a new insert. Either way, $20 for a new slow cooker is cheaper and healthier for you than layers of chemicals and hours of scrubbing and peeling.

The idea is simple. Just add your hardware and cover with water before bed. Turn your cooker on high heat and the hot water will soften the paint and peel it away in one big layer. Think of it

as like taking off a rubber glove. It"s really that easy. Make sure you check out all the tips over at The Family Handyman on the process. There are some things to be aware of if you think you might have lead based paint, and a few pointers to make things easier!
