I just recently finished restoring that hand plane. When I got it there was rust on all of it and no japanning left, so I sand blasted it, added back all the enamel, Briwaxed the handles and sharpened it. It"s been extremely useful so far and its very satisfying to have a tool sharp enough and precise enough to take off such thin shavings from projects. I would recommend having a good hand plane to anyone. Thanks!

Spray Paint Rack Improvements

544d801226ece23b5c000075.jpeg

I had built a spray paint rack a few weeks back to try and do some tidying up but I wasn"t satisfied with the end result. So in this Instructable I"ll show you how I fixed the two things I wasn"t happy with.

1. The rack needs a back to prevent spray paint cans from beating the wall to death when they are taken in and out of the rack.

2.The rack isn"t easily mountable to a wall. For this I"m going to show how I made and mounted French cleats.

Edit: Due to interest in the comments I have taken measurements for anyone wishing to build their own.

The overall dimensions are 50.5"x15"

Boards on all sides are 5.5" wide and the shelves on the rack are 3.5" wide

The shelves are spaced 4 3/4" apart on center

The shelves on the rack are 13.5" wide, which allows for 5 cans to fit side by side with about 1/2" to spare.

A standard spray paint can is slightly over 2.5"

This spray paint rack can hold 50 cans of spray paint

The angle of the shelves is roughly 35˚

The entire shelf was assembled with wood glue and a kreg jig to make pocket holes.

Step 1: Gather Tools & Materials

Gather Tools & Materials

Pencil

Level

Tape measure

Stud finder (optional)

Table saw

Counter sink bit

Drill

Chisel

Hand saw

Poplar board (I used 3/4" x 2 1/2")

Stain

Screws

1/8" tempered hard board

For this I used some 1/8" hardboard that I bought as a 4"x8" sheet at Home Depot. The first step was to mark the sheet to size for a rough cut with the circular saw. I marked mine at 15" so that I ended up with a piece 14" long that could be cut down to 13.5" on the table saw.I did this for two reasons: 1. I wanted to cut it a little

long to allow for a more precise cut on the table saw 2.You have to be aware of the distance between the guide on the circular saw and the blade. Once the hardboard was marked I clamped a board to the sheet to use as a guide when cutting. Then I proceeded to cut a 4"x14" piece with the circular saw.

When I had my 4"x14" piece I set my table saw to 13.5" and I cut the piece down to its exact width. Next I marked my board at the proper length which in my case was about 44" and got out my miter gauge. I cut the board down to length. This gave me a piece 44"x13.5" that was ready to be attached to my spray paint rack.

Preparing French Cleats

IMG_3889.JPG

I started off by setting my table saw to 45˚. Then I took a piece of scrap I had lying around that is about 1/2"x2"x28" and I ripped it down the middle. This gave me the two halves of my french cleat. Next I marked and cut the end that attaches to the spray paint rack to length. I test fitted the french cleat in the rack and then counter sunk and screwed it into place. Then I just used my hand plane to make it completely flush with the surrounding boards.

In order to have the spray paint rack hang flush against the wall I needed to inset the french cleat and in order to have a working french cleat I needed to remove some material on the sides. To do this I used a combination of a dovetail saw, coping saw and a chisel(I recommend the coping saw for a rough cut and the chisel to only be used to clean up the cuts). I began by marking out where I would need to clear out material. Next I made two straight cuts, one following the 45˚ angle of the french cleat and the other one straight down where I had marked. After that I connected the two straight cuts with a coping saw. I unfortunately tried to use only the chisel at first to speed things along but I ended up splitting the end of my wood. Because of this you will also see that I countersunk and screwed the french cleat in from the top to be sure it was sturdily attached.

Attaching the Hardboard

IMG_3930.JPG

IMG_3931.JPG

IMG_3932.JPG

This was the simplest of steps. I just used #6 3/4" wood screws to attach the hardboard to the back of my spray paint rack. I used 9 screws equally spaced around the back I you can see in the picture above. For this step I didn"t bother to counter sink the screws because the screws would be on the back where they wouldn"t show and the hardboard is soft enough that the screws drive almost flush with the surface anyways.

I noticed in this step though that my rack was slightly bowed and so my hardboard stuck out in one spot on the back. To fix this I simply used my hand plane to bring the hardboard flush with the sides.

Mounting the Rack with French Cleats

IMG_3939.JPG

First I took my other french cleat and found the studs in my wall and cut it down to length. I found the studs in my wall by taking a small nail and driving it into the wall where I thought the studs should be. Both my guesses hit solid wood once they made it through the dry wall so I put my screws there. After that I used the scrap piece from that cut to figure out the height at which I needed to mount the receiving cleat. I simply held the rack at the height I wanted it, slid the scrap cleat underneath it and marked a line underneath that.

I took the receiving cleat and I predrilled and counter sunk two holes at the exact spots they needed to be mounted to the wall. Then I drilled one screw in the wall to hold it in place at the correct height. Next I used a torpedo level to level the receiving cleat and finally I drilled the right screw into place.

Lastly I hung the new and improved spray paint rack proudly on the wall.

Spicy Mushroom Miso Ramen

A comforting bowl of spicy mushroom miso ramen

Mushrooms + Fuji Family ="" LOVE and this week I’m getting the chance to go head to head with bloggers from Canada and Australia in a mushroom battle. Did you know that this month is National Mushroom Month here in the U.S.? To celebrate, last week kicked off the second annual Mushroom Masters, an international 4 week long competition between teams made up of 4 bloggers from the US, Canada, and Australia.

Mushroom Masters
Mushroom Masters

Each week one blogger from each country is taking on a mushroom themed meal. Last week was Breakfast and the US was victorious, with Tracy’s (Shutterbean) amazing Caramelized Mushroom & Shallot Bruschetta. This week it’s all about Lunch, and I’m hoping that my recipe will bring home another win for Team USA!

Bowl of Spicy Mushroom Miso Ramen
Bowl of Spicy Mushroom Miso Ramen

I cooked up a spicy mushroom miso ramen. This ramen is lighter than the traditional bowl of Japanese ramen, and vegetarian, for all of my veg friends out there! It may be lighter, but it’s not light on flavor. The soup is made with a mushroom stock and is full of sauteed crimini mushrooms and garlic to go along with the slightly chewy noodles. It makes a fantastic lunch, because it is quick to make, healthy, filling (thanks to the protein rich mushrooms and miso paste), and total comfort food! A fabulous way to fuel your body for second half of the day!

For Team USA to bring home another win, you need to vote! (Just a simple one time click to show your support!)

You can get the recipe here.

Thank you so much for your support!! GO MUSHROOMS!!

This recipe is my way of making up for my childhood years where I didn’t like coconut. Actually, I don’t think ANY kid likes coconut, do they? I now understand it’s charm and adore it, and take advantage of children’s distaste for it. Every year at Halloween, I buy a big bag of Almond Joys “for the trick-or-treaters,” as well as other candy. We pass out candy by holding out the bowl and letting the kids pick which piece they want. Shockingly – at the end of the night, we’re left with a big bowl of Almond Joys. Then I’m forced to eat them. It’s a curse, I tell ya.

This coconut risotto satisfies my coconut craving all year around – it is full of coconut flavor from both shredded coconut and coconut milk. The rich color comes from vegetable stock. Omit the shrimp, or substitute tofu and you have a vegetarian bowl of goodness.

Get ready – this risotto is really spicy. Unable to decide between sriracha (which I love) and sambal oelek (which I double love), I just went ahead and put them both in there. Cut back on the sambal for a less spicy dish. With it’s mix of sweet, spicy, nutty, herby, limey and shrimpy, eating this made me think of

Pad Thai. Call it Pad Thai Risotto if you’d like, and enjoy! Just be sure to have a glass of ice water on hand for the mouth burn that is about to ensue (hurts so good).

Spicy Coconut Risotto with Lime Shrimp

Ingredients:

For the Spicy Coconut Risotto:

  • 1/4 cup shredded unsweetened coconut
  • 2 teaspoons fresh ground ginger root
  • 1/2 cup light coconut milk
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1/4 cup roughly chopped cashews or macadamia nuts

  • 1 pound raw 16/20 count peeled and deveined shrimp, patted dry
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice

Directions:

  1. In a small covered saucepot, heat vegetable stock over medium heat. When simmering, turn off heat and keep covered.
  2. In large high-sided skillet, heat butter over medium-high heat. Add rice, shredded coconut and ginger. Cook 2 to 3 minutes or until rice begins to become translucent at edges of grains, stirring constantly.
  3. Add 1/2 cup hot stock; stir constantly until mostly absorbed. Add additional stock in 1/2 cup increments, stirring after each addition and cooking until stock is mostly absorbed before adding more. Cook 20 to 25 minutes or until rice is tender, stirring frequently and adding stock as needed. Stir in coconut milk, sambal oelek, salt and pepper.
  4. Meanwhile, prepare Lime Shrimp: Heat butter in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add shrimp and cook 4 to 5 minutes or until opaque throughout, turning occasionally. Add lime juice; toss to combine.
  5. Divide risotto between warm pasta bowls. Top with shrimp and garnish with cilantro, cashews and sriracha.

Spaghetti Squash Lasagna Boats Cafe Delites

Spaghetti Squash Lasagna Boats - Cafe Delites

Spaghetti Squash Lasagna Boats | http://cafedelites.com

Layers of spaghetti squash, rich bolognese sauce, creamy ricotta and melted mozzarella cheese. Be still my beating heart. Since discovering spaghetti squash in our local grocery store, this stuff has been going down in this house like loco. Both plain and stuffed, we are big fans over here.

Spaghetti Squash Lasagna Boats | http://cafedelites.com

How did this go down? Well. When I make bolognese… I MAKE BOLOGNESE like I mean it. It becomes a situation where you’d think I’d be planning for an apocalypse and we’re going to starve I MAKE SO MUCH.

I had so much leftover, all the while eyeing off the spaghetti squash I’d just bought in the pantry. With all of the spaghetti squash lasagna boats flying around the internet, my curiosity peaked, and so it began.

You are going to start off roasting your squash halves using this recipe right here. Then, you’re going to fill each ‘boat’ with sauce. You can use the sauce in the recipe provided below, or if you have any leftover bolognese (you will need about 8 cups of thick bolognese sauce — not watery), you’re more than welcome to use that! OR, this Slow Cooker Bolognese recipe OR even this Ragu for a chunkier, shredded beef-type sauce work. Whatever you decide, we have you covered.

Top each with ricotta and mozzarella cheese; grill (or broil) them in the oven, and EAT.

Spaghetti Squash Lasagna Boats | http://cafedelites.com

Why do I say a thick sauce? It tastes better. That’s pretty much it. When using a thinner sauce, the sauce itself and its flavours don’t hold up as nicely as with a thick sauce. Just like lasagna, come to think of it.

2/ I used solid solder that is used in plumbing and using a blow torch melted it over the carving, I found clumping it together worked better as each drip would merge with the one next to it, keep going until you fill the mold with solder.
