Tools & Materials

Items may be Special Order in some stores. Product costs, availability, and item numbers may vary online or by market. Paint colors may vary slightly from those shown. Availability varies by market for lumber species and sizes.

Instructions

Step 1

From a 1 x 6 board 8-feet long, cut the backs (A), shelves (B), and braces (C) (Project Diagram, Cutting List and Cutting Diagram). Cut the 45-degree angle on each part as shown and sand all of the parts with 120-grit sandpaper to remove any sharp edges.

Good to Know

Follow the Cutting Diagram found in the Project Diagram for the best yield from your lumber. Not following the diagram will waste material, and possibly prevent you from getting the entire project out of one board.

Step 3

Prime and paint each shelf assembly following the manufacturer’s instructions (Honeycomb shown). Apply wood stain (Sunbleached shown) to the three backs. After the stain dries, apply two coats of polyurethane following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Between coats of paint or polyurethane, lightly sand away any bumps in the finish with a fine-grit sanding sponge. Wipe with a tack cloth and apply a second coat for the smoothest finish.

Step 4

When the finish has dried, mark the position of the shelf assembly on a shelf back (Project Diagram, Drawing 1) and use a countersink bit to drill the pilot holes for the three fasteners. Secure the shelves

to the backs with 1-1/4-inch screws.

Good to Know

For outdoor sconces, use a cedar board, exterior glue, and a deck screw. Then finish the exterior sconce with exterior solid-color stains to protect your project. For an interior version, use pine, poplar, or cedar boards with drywall screws, and interior wood glue.

Install picture hangers in the wall in a pattern of your choosing, or use the Project Diagram as a guide.

The sconces are meant to hold an LED candle or decorative element; they are not intended to hold burning candles.
