Modern Schoolhouse Office The Fauxmartha

Modern Schoolhouse Office - The Fauxmartha

Prior to moving in to #thefauxhouse, I’ve always worked in the dining or living room on a cheap, rickety Ikea desk. We moved that rickety desk into the new office and told ourselves we’d put off designing the room for at least a year. I lasted two whole weeks. When I should have been unpacking boxes, I was busy at work in the moodboard file. I wish I had saved all the iterations. There were hundreds. The inspiration for the room solidified when I found the Leather Schoolhouse Chairs from Rejuvenation. Schoolhouse. Schoolhouse! The office needed to be a modern schoolhouse. Warm, vibrant colors with modern, clean lines. Though Hallie always knew that.

Inspiration

Schoolhouse Green Office | @thefauxmartha

Here’s the 100th moodboard—the one we both finally agreed on. It was a holiday weekend. Kev had the day off, so we went to Ikea to buy a sturdy desk. We barely made it home with both of the very substantial butcher block desktops. As with all Ikea purchases, I assembled the furniture immediately. I’d like to be an Ikea furniture assembler in another life. It brings me so much joy. (Sadly, this is not sarcasm.) The desk configuration just so happened to fit the width of the room perfectly. Most people think it’s a built-in

. Though nothing is actually affixed—to the wall or eachother. The desktop and bases are super substantial for Ikea! I don’t worry about them shifting. Rejuvenation was having a huge sale that same weekend. I secured the chairs—the inspiration for the room. Next stop, the paint store.

Schoolhouse Green Office | @thefauxmartha

It’s important you know this—I’ve painted so many unsuccessful green walls in my short adult life. It’s nothing short of a miracle that Kev agreed to let me paint yet another wall green. I wanted the color to look like an old green schoolhouse chalkboard, so I decided to start with Second miracle—it turned out right the first time! I lightly seasoned the wall with chalk afterwards to lighten it a bit, then wiped the wall with broad strokes using a ribbed kitchen cloth. It left behind the most beautiful texture. I both love and hate telling people I only spent $20 on the wall. (Note: it’s important to start with a smooth wall for this technique.)

Schoolhouse Green Office | @thefauxmartha

We teamed up with Rejuvenation to finish out the room (from the lighting to the shelf to the rug), and Kim from Yellow Brick Home sent over the dreamiest of beach prints. I’m certain it lets off a little Vitamin D most days. I mostly love the way it disrupts the sea of dark green.

I love the function of a space just about as much as I love the form. We needed this room to act as an office 65% of the time and a playroom 35%. It’s downstairs, right off the kitchen, with plenty of floor space. The cabinets are filled with clear plastic containers to both house the toys and make them visible when needed. This makes cleanup far easier. Though the redundancy of cleaning after a toddler is still mind numbing. (I’m not sure a better design could solve that.) I also wanted a shelf strictly for looks. The office is enclosed by two large glass doors, so the room is always visible. I shopped vintage books around Minneapolis, keeping to a particular color palette, and used a new but vintage clock as a bookend. I like to give each room to have a personal touch without plastering it with all the pictures I forgot to take of us. So I added a vintage jar gifted to me by my grandma and a whittled face that sat on the desk of my late aunt.

Schoolhouse Green Office | @thefauxmartha

The room is calm enough to be creative and spicy enough to feel complete. I’m not sure which room I love more—the kitchen or the office. Lucky for Hal, she doesn’t have to decide.

Mini Jalapeno Popper Egg Rolls Spend With Pennies

Mini Jalapeno Popper Egg Rolls - Spend With Pennies

These Mini Jalapeno Popper Egg Rolls are the perfect snack! If you love Jalapeno Poppers, you'll love these... crispy, cheesy, creamy & spicy!

Mini Jalapeno Popper Egg Rolls

If you love Jalapeno poppers.. you are going to go crazy for these! Crispy, creamy, cheesy and spicy… pretty much everything you need to concoct the perfect bite!

I’m kind of addicted to spice.. I use Sriracha like ketchup and can’t really eat anything without adding some sort of heat to it. One of the all time favorite recipes on this site is Jalapeno Popper Dip so I know you guys like it a little spicy too!

This appetizer is easy to make, you’ll want to make sure the cheese is really well sealed so it doesn’t leak into the oil causing splatters. These egg rolls are mini (about 2″ long) so they use wonton wrappers and not egg roll wrappers. Wonton wrappers can be

found in most grocery stores in the produce area (or near the tofu). If you don’t see them, be sure to ask because most stores do have them!

Things you’ll need for this recipe

* canned/jarred jalapeno peppers * deep fryer or frying pan *

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 4 oz canned jalapeño peppers, diced
  • 2 green onions, finely sliced
  • 1 package wonton wrappers
  • vegetable oil for frying

  1. Preheat oil to 350 degrees.
  2. Combine the cream cheese, cheddar, jalapeño peppers, garlic powder and green onions.
  3. Place each wonton wrapper diagonally and add 1 tablespoon of filling. Brush a little bit of water on the edge of the wrapper and fold in half pinching to seal. Fold the sides in and roll the egg roll ensuring it is completely sealed.
  4. Drop each egg roll into the hot oil for about 3 minutes or until brown and crispy.
  5. Caution: the filling will be hot! Let cool 5 minutes before serving.

Other recipes you’ll love:

* Jalapeno Popper Dip * Jalapeno Popper Stuffed Chicken Breasts * Grilled Bacon Jalapeno Poppers *

Mini Croque Monsieurs { Baked Ham and Cheese with Bechamel Sauce} #ShareaSandwich Big Bear's Wife

Mini Croque Monsieurs { Baked Ham and Cheese with Bechamel Sauce} #ShareaSandwich - Big Bear's Wife

Mini Croque Monsieurs { Baked Ham and Cheese with Bechamel Sauce} #ShareaSandwich

I’ve found my new sandwich obsession! They’re called Croque Monsieurs which is pretty much just a fancy French name for a ham and cheese. haha. But oh, they’re so much more than just a “ham and cheese”.

These little Croque Monsieurs are bites of heaven! They’re made of thick slices of ham, thin slices of smoked gruyere cheese with a little Dijon mustard sandwiched in between two toasty slices of Cobblestone Bread Co. Million Dollar White Bread. These Mini Croque Monsieurs are sent off to the oven and then topped with a cheesy Bechamel Sauce followed by a trip under the broiler to finish!

Mini Croque Monsieurs { Baked Ham and Cheese with Bechamel Sauce} #ShareaSandwich

I’m still working through all of my pictures and getting ready to work on posts from my last vacation and I just had to make these little sandwiches! We had them when we were in Florida and I just couldn’t stop thinking about them!

Now that I’ve made them into “minis”, I already know what I’m going

to be taking to every social gathering or party for the next few months! I know that people are going to go crazy for them; BigBear and I already do!

Mini Croque Monsieurs { Baked Ham and Cheese with Bechamel Sauce} #ShareaSandwich

Speaking of parties…whos’ having a March Madness Party? You’ve got to make these!

Needing something to take to one of the parties? I’ve got you covered! A platter of these babies with a few little team logo picks and you’re set!

Ok, even if you’re not having a party, you’re still going to want to have some of these ready to be devoured!

Don’t worry! They aren’t difficult to make!

Amounts are below! The recipe below makes 12 Mini Croque Monsieurs – just double it for more :)

What you’ll need:

Cobblestone Bread Co. Million Dollar White Bread

Smoked gruyere cheese (I use a mandolin to carefully slice a block into slices)

Slices of ham

Dijon Mustard

Butter

Flour

Milk

Salt and pepper

Grated Parmesan cheese

Mini Croque Monsieurs { Baked Ham and Cheese with Bechamel Sauce} #ShareaSandwich

Pre-heat the oven to 400F.

Lay the slices of bread on a baking sheet. (I lined my baking sheet with foil for easy clean up).

Brush each side of each slice with a little bit of melted butter.

Once the oven is preheated, toast the sliced of bread in the oven for about 2 minutes. Flip the bread and toast the other side for about 2 minutes. Watch the bread and make sure it doesn’t burn.

Remove the bread from the oven and lay out three of the slices. Top them with a layer of mustard, 2 slices of cheese, ham, another 2 slices of cheese and a top slice of bread.

Cut each sandwich into 4 pieces.

Place the pieces back onto the baking sheet.

In a sauce pan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the flour and whisk until smooth and golden colored.

Slowly whisk in the milk and raise the heat just a little and whisk until the sauce starts to thicken.

Add salt and pepper to taste.

Once it starts to thicken, remove it from the heat and add the Parmesan cheese. Whisk until the cheese melts.

Scoop the sauce on to the tops of the mini sandwiches. (Yes, it kind of looks like white gravy haha)

Put the tray into the oven for about 6 minutes. Turn the broiler on and broil the tops for about 4 minutes or until the cheese it hot and bubbly. Don’t let the bread burn!

So who would I choose?

Virginia Tech… haha ok, ok that wasn’t a choice. ;) Sorry. But that’s BigBear’s favorite team so that’s normally what I go with. haha.

But, I think that if I HAD to pick between those two……

It would be UNC! haha GO Tar-Heels!

Mini Corn Dogs Jo Cooks

Mini Corn Dogs - Jo Cooks

mini-corn-dogs-10

Most times you want to eat something healthy and good for you like my California Quinoa Salad, but there comes a time in one’s life when one wants to eat a corn dog. Sometimes you just want to pop these babies in your mouth, covered in ketchup and mustard and just enjoy the yumminess of a corn dog. I’m just saying!

I for one, can probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve actually had a corn dog in my life. A couple times? Maybe. It was a long time ago because I can’t even remember when. I do remember buying the prepackaged ones a long time ago, and, although I hate to admit it, I did love them. But a fresh corn dog is better.

A mini corn dog is even better. A mini corn dog doesn’t make you feel as guilty. That’s if you can stop at just one.

mini-corn-dogs

I’m just happy I finally found a use for my lollipop sticks. I bought them before in the hope of making more cakepops, but I just never found the time and so I was super excited to finally use these sticks.

So I have to tell you that making these mini corn dogs was a lot of fun and pretty simple to do. It was a bit difficult as the dog was in the kitchen with me hoping I’d throw some hot dogs to her, so she was in my feet all the

time, but who can blame her. As I was frying these corn dogs it was smelling heavenly and even I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into one.

mini-corn-dogs-2

The batter for making corn dogs couldn’t be any easier and I found it much simple to use a cup, or a jar, much easier to just dip your hot dog in the cup than in a bowl.

Homemade corn dogs are so much better, and these mini corn dogs are super adorable and what better way have fun with your kids than to make these together.

Million Dollar House Ideas – What Makes A House Expensive These Days

Million Dollar House Ideas – What Makes A House Expensive These Days

View in gallery

But what is it that makes a house special? Is it the architecture, the furniture, the artwork or perhaps the location? There’s no single answer to this question. So how can you make your own home look stunning like that? There are a few things you should consider when moving into a new home and maybe even before that.

Underground wine cellar.

View in gallery

View in gallery

A wine cellar would definitely make your house more interesting. But simply having one is not enough to impress. An underground wine cellar can surely be a great feature if you know how to take advantage of it. The transparent glass floor presented here lets you see the cellar underneath. In addition, the space itself is very impressive. This LED wine cellar was found in a Tennessee home of interior designer Jamie Beckwith.

Underground garage.

View in gallery

Forget about the traditional garage which is a visible part of your house. Take a look at this type. An underground parking space with an elevator which disappears into the ground and only reveals itself when you push a button. It definitely has the wow factor.

Home theater.

View in gallery

Transforming the basement into a media room is a wonderful idea. It’s something you can work with even if you have a small house. Of course, if space allows you to, then you can go crazy with the idea and even choose a luxurious décor to suit the space.

A slide/ multifunctional stairs.

Lately it has become quite popular to have a slide inside the house. Sometimes the slide becomes a part of a complex staircase design. It’s very fun for the kids and a modern addition to any home. And if a slide is not exactly what you had in mind, there are also lots of other ways in which you can transform your staircase into a focal point.

Backyard tree house.

View in gallery

Having a tree house is not exactly unusual or extraordinary. But we’re not talking here about those tiny little houses you build for your kids. We’re talking about something more majestic than that, something like an actual house with rooms, a patio and much more which you can build around a tree. This idea is especially wonderful if you have an old tree on your property with an interesting shape.{found on theletteredcottage}.

Glass floor.

View in gallery

View in gallery

Another increasingly popular feature in luxurious home is the glass floor. Depending on what you wish to display, you can have a partial glass floor on the upper levels so you can take a peak at the living spaces underneath or even on the ground floor so you can see the rocks and all the natural beauty, in the case of a house that sits on pillars for example or for your patio.{found on jgdevelopment}.

Infinity pool.

by Wildman Photography

Few things are as impressive and breathtaking as an infinity pool and the views it can offer. If you have a house perched high on a cliff or close to water, it’s definitely worth having such a feature.

Roof pool.

View in gallery

Most people have a pool in the yard but if you really want something out of the ordinary then get a roof pool. You can relax there, have more privacy and, in addition to that, the views are much more beautiful from up there.

Koi pond.

View in gallery

Ponds are very beautiful water features lots of people enjoy having in their backyards or gardens. You can decorate it with all sorts of beautiful things like rocks and plants. Organize a sitting area so you can relax and meditate whenever you feel like it.

Heavenly backyard.

View in gallery

A beautiful backyard can greatly increase the value of a property. There are plenty of options. For example, you can have a fire pit, a gazebo, an outdoor living area or beautiful flower beds and bridges. Combine some of these elements and more for a gorgeous look.{found on site}.

Backyard river.

View in gallery

If possible, it would be amazing to have a natural river running through your backyard. If not, then you can make one yourself. It can be an extension or your pool or a specially designed water feature.

Zen bathroom.

View in gallery

Typically we don’t pay a lot of attention to the bathroom and this is one of the differences between having a regular home and an extraordinary one. A spacious bathroom with a relaxing, zen interior can elevate a house and transform it into a luxurious and unique space.{found on Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle}.

Spa bathroom.

View in gallery

View in gallery

Another option is to turn your regular bathroom into a spa. Use natural materials like stone and wood and pay attention to details. Create a relaxing and serene décor and the atmosphere will be amazing. You can also include features such as a steam shower for example.

Bathroom with a view.

View in gallery

We mentioned paying attention to details when designing and decorating the bathroom. That includes taking into consideration the orientation of the room and the views. For example, it would be wonderful to have a sunken tub like this one and a glass wall through

which to admire the landscape.

Grandiose closet.

View in gallery

You’ve probably noticed that all celebrities have huge walk-in closets in their homes. A big closet is definitely a sought after feature. It offers plenty of space to be organized and lots of room so that you can comfortably take your time to choose the perfect outfit.
