When we moved into our house 7 years ago, I was due to have Pumpkin 12 days later via c-section. I didn’t care about what boxes went where. I just wanted to get mostly unpacked and settled in those 12 days because I knew I would be tired and post surgery in 12 days. A lot of boxes just went into the attic or shed to be dealt with later.

Later came 7 years later….a LOT longer than I had planned. I wrote about my disgustingly messy house during my process of cleaning all the boxes out (which you guys sure seemed to like seeing my mess). We tried having a digital version of where things were, but it just didn’t work for both of us, so much as I like digital solutions, we went back to a paper version. Let me show you what I created and how we use it.

Now take a look out our shed! It looks great and so organized.

We have three areas in our house that we can store things: the attic, this shed and a little closet type room attached to the outside of our house.

My husband travels a lot. Up to this point, I had no idea where the boxes were or what they contained. Clearly our digital system wasn’t working. I needed to change that.

I created a color coded system for our three locations, but it could easily be converted for three themes. For example, the green could be all of your Christmas items, blue could be kids clothing in storage, and yellow could be everything else.

This is my master list. It tells me what color label is in what location and how many detail sheets there are for those boxes. It also tells me the names of the boxes that are in those locations. (You may be able to guess if you look closely at the sheet above) that we still haven’t organized what we call our house shed. More to do….more to do.

I created color coded detail sheets. I can write the name of each box in a rectangle, which is the same as the label I printed and placed on the box. Then I am able to write in detail what is in that box as well as a reminder of where the box is located.

I fill my ‘contents’ area in pencil, so I can change things easily as needed, but the new version of this system is fully editable. You can save the file and change things as needed. You can also save it to Dropbox and share it with anyone you want to have access to it, so it may make it work to keep this digitally rather than paper form.

supplies boxes. This system has saved us money because now if I need a craft supply (like an empty wine bottle or magnetic sheets), I know I have them in this box. The craft box listed is where my hurricane lamps sat for almost a year until I finally made them over.

This storage organization system has also saved mine and my husband’s sanity. I no longer have to call him at work to find out where he last put the box or where he thinks such and so on is. It is positively lovely!

Our shed is now neatly organized and majorly purged! I can get the bikes in and out without having to rearrange the entire shed. I also know what is in this shed by looking at my notebook.

Can you spot the blue label box? This shed is supposed to be green labels only…ooops! Had to remind my husband of this. I guess there is a learning curve.
