Make sure you scroll all the way to the bottom of the post to see all the awesome projects that some amazing bloggers have made using only 2×4 boards.

There is one spot on my deck that is an annoying little thing. I want to be able to see the pool so I can keep my eye on the kids, but I also want ample seating in my outdoor living spaces. I have always thought of making an L shaped “sofa” for this area and then I saw Ana White’s plans for a great outdoor sectional. This was exactly the type of thing I needed. I had to adjust the plans a little, to suit my space…hello beauty of DIY!

My completed bench is 60″x28.5″x27″!!!!! and the build reminded me very much of building my giant front porch bench which I love, love, love!

So lets get our build on, shall we?

Materials:

Here’s your wood list.

It’s pretty intense.

Are you ready????

Yup….12 2×4 boards. That is all you need. Isn’t that amazing?

Cut List:

9@53″

15@25.5″

2@28.5″

Let me give you a visual.

You can handle that, right?

Once everything is cut, give it all a good sanding with the 120 grit and then the 220 grit sand paper. It is so much easier to do this before you assemble the pieces.

Once everything is sanded, start by building the seat support. Take 2-53″ pieces and 5-25.5″ and make a rectangle. There will be about 11.5″ between the 25.5″ pieces . It’s not overly important for them to be perfectly spaced and sense I’m trying to fit a certain space, the overall dimensions were more important than exact spacing on the seat supports.

Next is the arms/legs. For each side, start with 2-25.5″ pieces and 1-28.5″ piece. Attach the 28.5″ arm at the top of the 2 25.5″ legs. I drilled the screws straight through the top and into the legs. We can fill those holes later.

Then add a 25.5″ support 14″ up from the bottom of the

leg and one 25.5″ turned on its side under that. And add an additional 25.5″ support under the armrest, on its side as well.

Now attach the arms/legs to the seat support. Clamps will make this part easier.

Add 6 53″ boards on top of the seat support drilling straight into the support pieces underneath. Try and space them as evenly as you can. There is going to be a cushion sitting on this, once I get around to making it, so I wasn’t too concerned about spacing.

As you can see, I filled some holes at this point.

Add two

Once the is dry, sand it smooth.

I still need to pick a color to stain it, but I want to pick fabric for the cushions first. Since these are not pressure treated boards, I will keep it inside for now, until I stain it and use some outdoor polyurethane on it.

Stain, poly, and some cushions will make this a great outdoor couch, but for now it is a great bench that will fulfill its life as an outdoor sofa before the winter is out….promise!

I was lucky enough to build this as part of a 2×4 build challenge hosted by the awesome Gina of The Shabby Creek Cottage. Check out all these other great builds you can make with 2x4s.
