49 Free DIY Workbench Plans & Ideas to Kickstart Your Woodworking Journey

49-awesome-free-diy-workbench-plans-for-your-woodworking-projects

Woodworking is awesome. It"s a great hobby that saves you money because store-bought furniture and buildings are overpriced. For some people, woodworking is also a money-making activity because they can sell their creation.

If you want to start your own woodworking journey, first, you need a workbench. Without a workbench, everything in your workspace is going to be a whole bunch of mess.

As a woodworker, you definitely want to build a workbench yourself.

It"s an awesome and easy project to kickstart your journey.

To help you get started, we"ve collected 49 of the best workbench that you can build in less than one weekend. If you need some ideas or instructional guides, this is the place.

So, let’s get rolling. You’ve got work to do!

1. The Simple Sturdy Garage Workbench

WB1

If you have a garage then this work bench would be amazing for it. You would have a designated place to work and leave your tools.

And it appears to be super easy to build. Which is always an added bonus in my book. I mean, if you have a whole life to build who needs to waste unnecessary time on building a workbench?

2. Stand Alone Simple Workbench

WB2

This workbench looks amazing. It is a stand-alone workbench that would be great to go in a shed or garage. And it appears to have ample workspace too.

But to me the greatest aspect of it is that it looks extremely easy to build. So if you are on the novice side with your carpentry skills but need a workbench so you can learn more then this would be a great bench for you.

3. The Shanty 2 Chic Workbench

WB3

These plans for this workbench are pretty amazing. Again, this workbench looks super simple to build. It is a basic style and has wheels on it too so you can move it around your shop for your convenience. How cool is that?

But the plans themselves are really great too. You get a picture to help you see what your final product should look like. And you get a great materials list which always makes life easier.

4. The Rolling Tool Cabinet Workbench

WB4

If you have one of those rolling tool cabinets that you keep all of your odds and end tools in then you probably haven’t realized it yet, but you are 75% to the finish line with this workbench. All you do is place a wood working space on top and you have a portable workbench.

And what makes it even better is that you will have a ton of storage. If you are anything like my husband, you need the storage space. Plus, it makes everything very accessible and will hopefully encourage you to keep your shop area clean. (The Mrs. or Mr. will thank you!)

5. The Big Workbench

WB5

I’m really sold on this workbench. It basically has everything you could need. Not only does it provide a large workspace. But it also has ample space for storage and places to hang clamps.

And it has a place overhead that you can hang a shop light. That will obviously make working on this bench much more enjoyable. And to make it even better, the plans are laid out really well too.

6. The 4x8 Workbench

WB6

This is a great workbench. You’ll have ample of work space. And the plans are easy to read as well. So if you find yourself needing a large workspace then this is probably it.

But what takes this workbench over the top is the extra shelf included. When the person who designed this came up with it, they added the extra shelf because they always had more mess than workspace. Not a problem with this design.

7. Timber Workbench

WB7

This workbench is rustic and really cool. So they literally walk you through each step of this build including falling the trees. Talk about detail.

But what makes this bench look so cool is that some of the bark is left on the legs. And the workspace looks raw. It is a thrifty idea that looks amazing. So if you need a workspace on a budget, I’d say this one will give you a lot of bang for your buck.

8. Garage Workbench With Storage

WB8

This garage workbench is truly a great workbench. It not only has ample of workspace (which is always high on the list of priorities.) But it also has a lot of storage. You have shelves underneath with drawers so you can store all of your tools out of the way.

And it has an open shelf as well which is handy for storing things too large for the drawer. Or just to place items you’ll need to reach quickly. So if you have a garage space for this workbench, I highly doubt you’ll be disappointed.

9. The Inexpensive Heavy Duty Workbench

WB9

The word heavy duty doesn’t do this workbench justice, in my opinion. When you first look at it you think, “Yep, that table will hold just about anything I’d want to build.”

But what makes it even more appealing is the fact that the instructions tell you how to build it for little cost. That is always a nice addition to any project. So if you want a large, inexpensive, and heavy duty workbench then you might just have found yourself one.

10. The Single Shelf Workbench

WB10

This workbench is a very simple design and appears very easy to build. There isn’t a ton of different storage options for it. But if you need something that is easy to build then this is probably the workbench you’ve been looking for.

And the storage shelf it offers is great to just set your tools in their cases beneath the workbench. That obviously makes it easier to grab when you need it quickly.

11. The Novice Workbench

WB11

This workbench looks fancy but it can actually be broken down and built easily by even a beginner at carpentry. It has a large storage shelf beneath the workbench.

But it also has multiple pull-out drawers which are great to store smaller items as well. So if you want a workbench that looks great but is also easy to build then this could be it.

12. 4 Hour $70 Workbench

WB12

Are you on a limited budget of time and money? Then this could be the workbench for you. It is meant to be built in only 4 hours and for a budget of only $70.

So if you like a workbench that has a good amount of workspace, plenty of storage space, and great plans to assist in the build then I believe you might’ve just found it.

13. The DIY Workbench

WB13

This workbench is very basic. But when building that is usually a good thing. It is a simple workbench with an open storage shelf on the bottom. But as the picture shows, if you’d like a place to hang your smaller tools you could always use a pegboard overhead for that.

And in addition to the simplicity of the build, this workbench is designed to be sturdy. So whether you are using it to make repairs to machines, build a new piece of furniture, or use it as a potting station this one should hold up to the pressure.

14. The Collapsible Workbench

WB14

This workbench is so cool. Especially for people that need a workbench is a smaller space. So if this sounds like you then definitely give these plans a glance.

So when you need this workbench it provides ample amount of workspace. But when you need the space more than the workbench you can fold it down to where it is only a few inches in depth. That is pretty neat.

15. The Workbench Desk

WB15

So I really like this idea. Even if you aren’t in the market for a workbench then you might consider this option for your next desk. I’m currently working at a murphy desk (the kind that folds onto the wall.) My husband built it for me.

But I really appreciate the extra space that this workbench could offer. However, if you just need a workbench for woodworking and other projects then this would certainly offer ample amount of space, storage, and convenience.

16. Portable Workbench With Lots Of Storage

WB16

This workbench is amazing. Not only do you have ample amount of workspace. But you also get a ton of storage too. So I don’t just mean a small shelf here and there. The whole thing is basically storage on the sides and underneath.

Which means, whatever you could possibly need to store you could pretty much find a way to store it here. And then take it with you since this workbench is portable.

17. Easy Portable Workbench

WB17

If you need a portable workbench that is super easy to build and move then this could very well be it. I love this workbench because it is easy to move around. That way when you need to work on different items you won’t have to drag the item to your workshop.

Instead, you can just take your workbench to the item which makes for a ton less lugging things around. And this workbench still has room for storage too.

18. Roll Away Workbench System

WB18

As soon as I saw a picture of this system I said, “Wow! That is really cool!” And it’s because it is. So if you are looking for a DIY workbench that will rock your socks then build this one. Not only does this workbench system come apart and become portable.

But it also has the tools built in to the workbench. That way if you are working on something that only needs certain tools then you can just break that part of the workbench away and take it to the item. Talk about saving your back.

19. The All-Purpose Workbench

WB19

This workbench will do exactly what it says. Basically, no matter the project this bench should cover them all. I also love the fact that it follows the classic style.

So what this means for the builder is that it isn’t too complex to build. Yet, you should still have a good amount of storage and workspace too.

20. A Real Woodworker’s Bench

WB20

So this bench is basically saying that it knows what a real woodworker needs in order to work and it is it. The plans claim that it is sturdy enough not to move around on you while working. And it is also stiff enough that it won’t buckle under pressure.

And yet it still looks simple enough to build. So if you are a serious woodworker (or hope to one day be) then you might want to give this workbench a serious glance. You shouldn’t be disappointed.

21. The $50 Workbench

WB21

I love this bench. It looks to hold a lot. It also appears to have a ton of workspace. And what makes it even better is that you could get all of that for a budget of $50.

So if you need a workbench but are working on a tight budget then give this workbench a glance. You might find exactly what you need at a price that you can afford.

22. The Ultimate Mobile Workbench

WB22

This workbench has just about everything that you need in a nice mobile package. It has lots of storage space. And yes, this workbench rolls too.

But what is even better is that it has additional workspace that is collapsible so you can use it when needed. But also collapse it for easy storage of the workbench. Does this sound like what you’ve been looking for? Well, then check it out.

23. Flip Top Workbench

WB23

This flip top workbench is another one that just makes you utter the words, “Cool!” The reason is because you store whatever large tool you need underneath. Then you flip it over when you want to use it

.

However, when you don’t want to use it, you simply flip it down. Then you have ample amount of flat workspace. It is also a huge space saver.

24. Workbench On A Budget

WB24

So a lot of people find themselves working on a tight budget when building something like a workbench. I mean, it is important and you do use it. But you really don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars in building it. If that was the case, you’d probably just buy one.

So this workbench is really awesome because they give you a detailed materials list and detailed plans to help you with the build. But they also teach you how to Build this workbench ›on a budget. So have no fear. Even if your budget is small, your workbench doesn’t have to be.

25. A Fold Down Workbench

WB25

Do you have a smaller shop space? If so, don’t worry about it. There are still great ways to fit a workbench in a tighter space.

So if this is where you find yourself then check out this workbench. It is an easily accessible fold down workbench. You’ll still have plenty of workspace without taking up a lot of permanent space.

26. Basic DIY Workbench

WB26

This basic DIY workbench has the classic design of an open shelf beneath. But it gives you ample amount of workspace.

And the open shelf also gives you easy access to any of the tools you might need while working or fixing something. Plus, you can pretty well store anything that you need.

27. Sturdy Workbench

WB27

The plans for this workbench make building it quite simple. But what makes it even better is that you are building a quality product.

So the most obvious bonus to this particular workbench is how sturdy it is. But the fact that it can keep you from dragging your tools all over the place is a great bonus to building a workbench too.

28. Multipurpose Workbench

WB28

This workbench looks really great. It is appealing to the eye but also is very functional in more ways than one.

So this bench can be used for working. It can also be used as an outfeed for a table saw. And even more, it has multiple drawers so you can use it as a way to organize your tools too.

29. The Thorough Workbench

WB29

This workbench plans is very thorough. What I mean by that is that each individual part is its own post.

So if you have any questions about how to put a workbench together this series of post is bound to answer them for you. Beyond the thoroughness, this workbench follows the classic style of a workbench and is very functional.

30. The Garage Workshop Workbench

WB30

I’m a sucker for the classic style workbench. I think it is simple enough to build and very functional too. I also like the fact that it has enough storage to it to hold any big tools you need to keep handy for projects.

But what I like about this particular workbench is the rustic style. It looks clean cut enough that it doesn’t scream homemade. But still rustic enough that you’ll be proud to say that you made it and people will believe you.

31. Heavy Duty Workbench

WB31

This workbench is another heavy duty one. It has a good size workspace. And it also has a great open area for storage underneath.

But this heavy duty workbench is also really awesome because it is portable. That’s right, it has wheels! So no matter where you need to use it, it can easily be moved there.

32. The Simple Foldable Workbench

WB32

This workbench is super simple and requires minimal materials. It has a great amount of workspace and ample storage for tools and other odds and ends too.

But what makes this workbench so awesome is the fact that it can be folded down and put away when not in use. So if you are short on space this workbench could be a perfect fit for you.

33. Wall Mounted Folding Workbench

WB33

This workbench is really awesome. It is what I would call a ‘murphy workbench.’ Murphy usually insinuates that it folds back onto or into a wall.
