{Summer House} Garden Sheds & Backyard Retreats!

I love a cute, romantic or otherwise charming garden shed that could easily be used as a little summer house (a garden structure used for relaxation in warm weather) in the backyard! I’m not sure why I love them so much, but I just do. I have been dreaming of a little garden escape in my own backyard for quite some time.

Since we have a new house without trees or much landscaping, I’m in need of ideas for camouflaging the view of our neighbors. While trees will definitely be in the plans over the next few years, I’m also thinking about a garden shed. Not only would it be practical for garden storage or a dreamy backyard escape, but it could offer privacy and give our yard a little more structure.

This is a sweet little shed. My girls would have loved that as a play house!

That shed is basically a guest house in your backyard. Actually, I could live there. Forget the main house.

I’m thinking I could get used to a morning quiet time with a cup of tea in this backyard church er, shed? Sigh.

Oh, this open and airy lattice shed is so adorable! I love that it would let the breeze and light filter through, making it the perfect place to garden on a beautiful summer day!

And this little shed is like a backyard destination, the perfect retreat for being creative with art, painting, gardening or flower arranging! I cannot imagine a more charming way to fill an unused corner of my backyard!

Save your oven space! The BEST crockpot sweet potato casserole

It’s time for some Thanksgiving recipes!! The husband, well, he’s pretty excited that he’s basically getting Thanksgiving for a lot of the month of October/November. He has requested that I “recipe experiment” with making several hams before the actual holiday. Basically, I need to buy ham and prepare it more because he loves it.

Got it!

Anyways, in kicking off these Thanksgiving recipes I’ve got for you all, I had to start with a personal favorite. SWEET POTATOES! I love sweet potatoes. I eat them year round, but Thanksgiving gives me even more of an excuse to eat them, well, pretty much every day. And in all honesty, out of all the delicious Thanksgiving recipes available, sweet potato casseroles have always been my favorite. I know, I’m crazy.

So here’s the good news though. You know how there is likely a bazillion and one things to cook in your ovens on Thanksgiving? Well this recipe is going to save you some of that limited oven space! It is all made in the slow cooker. That’s right! Mixed in the slow cooker and then cooked in the slow cooker. And if you are like me — eaten right out of the slow cooker. Since it wasn’t a formal dinner or anything (yet), it was totally acceptable.

PLUS, this sweet potato casserole can also be made the night before and then popped into your slow cooker the day of. (Win!)

The best crockpot sweet potato casserole

So let’s talk about the ingredients, first off, sweet potatoes – they are canned. So I tried this recipe with both fresh and canned sweet potatoes, and honestly, the canned were better in my opinion. Plus, the ease with the canned, it’s a pretty big difference! But if you want to use fresh sweet potatoes, totally acceptable and tastes fantastic; you’ll just have a few extra steps. You’ll need to peel, chop, and boil the sweet potatoes until they are soft enough to mash. Then you are right up to speed with the rest of the instructions

As far as the other ingredients in the casserole, there is some butter, sugar (both brown and white), some eggs, milk, vanilla, and orange juice. Don’t forget the orange juice – it gives the casserole a little bit of “zing” and such a great flavor! You could also add a little bit of cinnamon here, but that’s totally up to you.

Easy (Make the Night Before) Crockpot Sweet Potato Casserole

Next, the “topping.” It’s basically just brown sugar, flour, pecan chips, butter, and a little vanilla. Delicious. I loved this topping cooked in the slow cooker, but if you want it a little crispier, you can pop this casserole in the oven to crisp the top. You literally just blend all of the ingredients together (I did this IN the crockpot) and then smooth them with a spatula. Mix together that topping and spread it on top. And that’s it!!

This casserole may taste like you slaved away all day in the kitchen, but it can be our secret that it only took about 10 minutes prep

{Craft} Closet Makeover - Beneath My Heart

And here it is now!…

So much bettter!

It all started with taking everything out of the closet and removing the header.

Cy helped me with this part. I wanted to open up the closet so it was easier to reach the top shelf and so it wouldn’t look so much like, well…. a closet.

Eventually, we are going to pull up all of the old carpet in this room, so we decided to go ahead and remove the carpet from our closet before we built our shelves.

Eli helped with the clean up.

Next, I painted the closet the same color as the rest of the room. It is called Natural Choice by Sherwin Williams, but I always have them color match it at Lowe’s and use Valspar.

We went to Lowe’s to buy some shelving pieces and decided to use these…

We decided to build shelves to hold some baskets on each side of the closet. When we nailed these pieces together, we made sure that we used wood glue as well in between the pieces to make sure that the hold was strong.

We bought some pegboard from Lowe’s and covered the back and side walls with it.

Then we were able to place the first shelf right on top of the pegboard and 1×2’s.

I wanted to go a little out of my comfort zone and pick a bright color to paint the pegboard. I will with Caribbean Holiday by Olympic.

I LOVE this color!

I bought 6 corbels from Lowe’s and painted them white using my favorite Valspar paint in Satin White.

To make the shelves look a little more custom, we added trim work to the front of them.

After a lot of filling nail holes, caulking, and painting, the closet was ready to be organized and decorated.

To help me organize my craft supplies, I bought the following pegboard organizer kit from Lowe’s…

It is so nice to have all of my supplies out in the open.

Now I don’t have to waste time searching for supplies when working on a project. It is all within plain view.

I really like the decorative touch that the corbels I bought at Lowe’s give to the shelves.

I wanted to be sure to add a cute pendant light to my closet, so I bought this Edison Light from Lowe’s.

Oh, we also painted the subfloor with white paint. I am planning on painting the wood floor in the rest of the room as well {eventually.}

I am also wanting to put a stool in the space in the middle of the closet. However, I have yet to find the type of stool I am wanting to use.

But for now, I am thrilled with my new craft closet!! There’s nothing better than feeling more organized!

I LOVE IT! You did a fantastic job! I converted one bedroom into a craft room. Both the closet and room I use for sewing and crafts. Unfortunately the room also has to be used as a spare guest room for when company comes. So there’s a big queen bed in there too. I just finished my laundry room – its beautiful and my next project is to change the closet in the laundry room into my craft space.

Anne, I got my corbels at Home Depot. If you go to the store, someone would be able to help you find them. :)

And yes, I think they were around $6 a piece. Hope that helps.

I really love what you did with that closet! My house was built in an era (pre Civil War) when people apparently didn’t wear any clothes…thus we have NONE closets. I built an enclosure SOMETHING like a closet for the washer/dryer and I think it could use a makeover like this! Right now there is just a jumble of junk on some shelves in there – and I could definitely use it for my craft supplies – thanks for the inspiration!
