I’ve found my new sandwich obsession! They’re called Croque Monsieurs which is pretty much just a fancy French name for a ham and cheese. haha. But oh, they’re so much more than just a “ham and cheese”.
These little Croque Monsieurs are bites of heaven! They’re made of thick slices of ham, thin slices of smoked gruyere cheese with a little Dijon mustard sandwiched in between two toasty slices of Cobblestone Bread Co. Million Dollar White Bread. These Mini Croque Monsieurs are sent off to the oven and then topped with a cheesy Bechamel Sauce followed by a trip under the broiler to finish!
I’m still working through all of my pictures and getting ready to work on posts from my last vacation and I just had to make these little sandwiches! We had them when we were in Florida and I just couldn’t stop thinking about them!
Now that I’ve made them into “minis”, I already know what I’m going
Speaking of parties…whos’ having a March Madness Party? You’ve got to make these!
Needing something to take to one of the parties? I’ve got you covered! A platter of these babies with a few little team logo picks and you’re set!
Ok, even if you’re not having a party, you’re still going to want to have some of these ready to be devoured!
Don’t worry! They aren’t difficult to make!
Amounts are below! The recipe below makes 12 Mini Croque Monsieurs – just double it for more :)
What you’ll need:
Cobblestone Bread Co. Million Dollar White Bread
Smoked gruyere cheese (I use a mandolin to carefully slice a block into slices)
Slices of ham
Dijon Mustard
Butter
Flour
Milk
Salt and pepper
Grated Parmesan cheese
Pre-heat the oven to 400F.
Lay the slices of bread on a baking sheet. (I lined my baking sheet with foil for easy clean up).
Brush each side of each slice with a little bit of melted butter.
Once the oven is preheated, toast the sliced of bread in the oven for about 2 minutes. Flip the bread and toast the other side for about 2 minutes. Watch the bread and make sure it doesn’t burn.
Remove the bread from the oven and lay out three of the slices. Top them with a layer of mustard, 2 slices of cheese, ham, another 2 slices of cheese and a top slice of bread.
Cut each sandwich into 4 pieces.
Place the pieces back onto the baking sheet.
In a sauce pan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the flour and whisk until smooth and golden colored.
Slowly whisk in the milk and raise the heat just a little and whisk until the sauce starts to thicken.
Add salt and pepper to taste.
Once it starts to thicken, remove it from the heat and add the Parmesan cheese. Whisk until the cheese melts.
Scoop the sauce on to the tops of the mini sandwiches. (Yes, it kind of looks like white gravy haha)
Put the tray into the oven for about 6 minutes. Turn the broiler on and broil the tops for about 4 minutes or until the cheese it hot and bubbly. Don’t let the bread burn!
Serve warm!
That’s it! That’s all you have to do and before you know it you’ll be sitting down to enjoy these little bites!
Want to serve these at your March Madness party? I’ve got the perfect way for you to show off your favorite team!
Print off your teams logo, tape them onto toothpicks and stick them into the centers of the Mini Croque Monsieurs! Not only did you serve up a tasty treat but you’re also showing your team spirit! It’s a Win, Win!
So here’s a little fact. :) Down where I live there is a constant battle between these two teams. You either love Duke or you love UNC. haha
So who would I choose?
Virginia Tech… haha ok, ok that wasn’t a choice. ;) Sorry. But that’s BigBear’s favorite team so that’s normally what I go with. haha.
But, I think that if I HAD to pick between those two……
It would be UNC! haha GO Tar-Heels!
Who would you choose?
