You guys I’m so excited to be sharing the sunroom makeover I did with Lowes last week in Boston finally! It was seriously a dream come true for me to re-do a room for someone who wasn’t expecting it. Ok, so they were expecting us, but they were picked out of a bunch of people who applied for the makeover so how cool is that? It was also a dream come true of mine to be able to makeover someone else’s space with my best friend & I would say our first time was a success. Mr. LMB had never been to Boston so it was also fun to travel there together & get a few moments to explore the city while we were in town for the makeover. We hit the lottery with the family we chose. They were so hospitable & were 4 of the sweetest souls we have ever met. I mean 5 including their dog Jack. They lived in a beautiful home & just were good people. You know those people that are just awesome to be around? Yah. That’s them. This is what I love to do, I love decorating our home & updating it, but to work on someone else’s home, that’s where my heart is. I love making people love their spaces they live in. Anyways on to the good stuff Liz, stop being sentimental!
So we arrived at their house last week on a rainy Tuesday & she brought us to the sunroom that we would be making over. Right away I saw so much potential! Amy & her husband said they love my style & they had loved the mood boards I had made for them prior to coming to Boston so they just let me get to work. Lowes provided a wonderful team of people to help us execute the makeover in the two days which was so helpful! The team was made up of Lowes volunteers from the local stores & they were rockstars! First we cleared the whole space & cleaned floors & walls to prep it for paint. Once the walls & floors were washed [we used TSP found at Lowes mixed with water & rags] we got to work painting the walls [Dove White mixed in Valspar] the color really brightened the place up & gave it a fresh clean new life.
Next we started a whole bunch of DIY projects. First up was our DIY shelves. We stained boards cut to the size we wanted & spray painted some very inexpensive ‘L’ brackets used in closets & garages to make the shelves in the corner. It’s such an easy & inexpensive way to add shelving to your home & the nice part is you can customize it to your home decor style by staining the wood any color you want & the same goes for spray painting the brackets. The shelves were perfect for some greenery & eventually she can add her own personal touches to them as well.
Next we grabbed a bunch of succulents from Lowes & for a quick & easy makeover we painted the pots a bunch of different shades of gray. Another super easy way to update your space! We placed the potted plants all around the room to bring the outdoors into the space & to add a charming little touch.
One big thing we wanted to do for the homeowners was replace all of their screens in the space. They were old & falling apart. They said this past winter really did a number on them & they kept falling out into the room. Mr. LMB really worked his magic on them by reinforcing all of the wood, painting them the color of the trim in the space, & replacing the screens in the frames. It was a pretty easy fix, but made a huge difference in the space & made the sunroom more useable for the family.
Right before we left for the day we painted the floors so that they could dry over night. The floors were painted in Kendall Charcoal just like the window trim & doors. I really gave the room a sophisticated clean look which was one of my ultimate goals. The rug kind of covers the floors in all these photos, but just know the gray floors are fabulous & the rug just amplifies them & makes the space even more cozy.
Day two was a fun day of some touch ups & installation. We made curtains for the space out of large drop cloths just like we did in our home [here]. We painted the doors & trim the same color as the floors [Kendall Charcoal ] We decided to leave the ceiling alone because we loved it bare & thought the bare added warmth to the space. I really wanted the sunroom to just be an extension of the interior of the home & look like a cozy living room & I think we accomplished that.
For the coffee table we decided to go the DIY route & use a door that we found in their basement. We cut the door in half & added some wooden legs to the the bottom of the table & painted the top & legs in Valspar revere pewter. That’s it. A 5 minute DIY table. Mr. LMB also built a quick and easy pallet tray for the top of the table to set drinks and such on, but the nice thing about this door table is that there is a large edge to the table where things can be places as well.
The bar cart was a fun addition to the space as this family loves
I ended up running into a few hiccups like the electrician not showing up so we were unable to do the lighting that we wanted to & ordering a few pieces of furniture a little late so we did not get them on time & we had to work with what we had, but it all turned out so great even though it wasn’t as planned! I think a few hiccups can be expected when you only have two days to complete a makeover & when you are coming in from out of town so I would say we did pretty good! The homeowners loved their space & we were even able to have a few cocktails in celebration in their new space!
I think this space turned out amazing & seeing the homeowners happy with the space just makes it that much better. I’ll be back in a later post to share with you more behind the scenes photos & other outtakes as well. Let me know what you think of the makeover in the comments below & I hope this post shows you some simple ways you can re-do your spaces in your home!
